\"ike_bg_header\"<\/a>The new\u00a0Hanson\u00a0album may be called\u00a0Shout It Out<\/em>, but the boys didn\u2019t have to scream to get our attention. We spoke to the soft-spoken and oldest brother,\u00a0Isaac, who\u00a0talks about their fifth studio album, which performer he would like to collaborate with, and their relationship with Weird Al.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0Is there any song you particularly favor on your new album\u00a0Shout It Out<\/em>?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0We always make the joke that picking songs that are your favorite is like picking children. You love them all equally because they\u2019re all different.\u00a0Give A Little<\/em>\u00a0is one of the ones that I can consistently listen to and really enjoy. I think the thing about\u00a0Thinkin\u2019 \u2018Bout Somethin\u2019<\/em>\u00a0is that I\u2019ve been hearing it so much lately with all the stuff that we\u2019ve been doing that I have less of a desire to listen to it over and over and over again.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0Are there any lyrics or certain lines that really stand out to you or have a special meaning to you?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0One of my favorite songs on the record is\u00a0Voice in the Chorus<\/em>. I like the groove of it. It\u2019s a little bit more of a complex groove. The middle section of that song, it goes \u201cI never really know til you\u2026\u201d and the drumbeat is kind of complicated and I really like it because when you\u2019re listening to it, it doesn\u2019t sound complicated. There\u2019s some stuff like that I just appreciate. I also really like the horn arrangement on that. It\u2019s kind of a tell-off song to a fair weathered\u00a0friend\u00a0or a fair weathered fan. It depends what your perspective is on it. But it basically says, \u201cWell, things are not going so great for me right now, but when things start going great, you\u2019re going to show back up and be like \u2018hey remember me\u2019 and I\u2019ll be like \u2018you\u2019re just another voice in the chorus.\u2019\u201d I kind of like it because it\u2019s snarky.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0A lot of times, musicians like to make a statement with their songs, is there a certain message you are trying to send out with this album?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0I think one of the biggest things this record says is that it\u2019s perpetually optimistic. It\u2019s an upbeat record but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s upbeat without lyrical content. It\u2019s not just lightweight love songs. There are places for lightweight love songs\u2014love them, but it\u2019s hard to make an entire record out of it and feel like you\u2019re making quality music. In general, the record is about not being afraid, and getting out there, and being the best you can be, and enjoying the moment, and seizing the day\u2014Carpe Diem!<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0All of you have kids now, have any of them demonstrated any musical talent or have they expressed any interest in the field?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0Yes and we try to scare it out of them. All of our kids are showing varying\u00a0degrees of interest in music. For some of them it\u2019s purely just an\u00a0exercise\u00a0of hitting things and for others it\u2019s much more complex. In the\u00a0case of\u00a0Taylor\u2019s kids in particular, I\u2019ve noticed some really unusual complex understandings of music and his kids are the oldest so that\u2019s part of it too. His four-year-old, well actually, he\u2019s not quite four yet, but for the last six to nine months or so, it\u2019s been really really noticeable his aptitude for rhythm and his understanding of drums. He\u2019s actually really shockingly good at playing the drums, it\u2019s kind of weird. Some people are just born with an aptitude for music. My oldest son who is now three has definitely started to pick up singing a lot more recently and he\u2019ll just make up songs that are\u00a0combinations\u00a0of the ABC\u2019s and \u2018Jesus Loves Me\u2019 and then next thing you know the beach somehow gets mixed in there or the\u00a0backyard\u00a0or his cars.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0Whose idea was it to get Weird Al in the\u00a0video\u00a0for\u00a0Thinkin\u2019 \u2018Bout Somethin\u2019<\/em>?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0It was kind of a clutch decision. It stems from the fact that Taylor, in particular, has had a pretty close relationship with Al because Al\u2019s daughter and Taylor\u2019s oldest son are the same age, and they\u2019ve hung out a good bit in non-professional situations. And we\u2019ve known Al since 1998 and have kept in contact with him periodically. And we\u2019ve always been big fans of what Al does and have just always found his\u00a0humor\u00a0to be really great and have always appreciated his records.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0By any chance, did he mention if he plans on mocking this song or any of the songs on the album?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0You never know. I don\u2019t know whether or not if Al will do that and I\u2019m not sure whether or not he\u2019d tell us until he\u2019s done it. I do know that there is an upcoming collaboration between Hanson and Al, so I\u2019ll just kind of leave it as a mystery, and it is related to Al\u2019s new record.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0Besides Weird Al, are there any other performers you would like to work with?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0Billy Joel is one that I have always wanted to\u00a0talk\u00a0to in a more in depth way. And more than that, I think I\u2019d really like to sit down and work with him and write a few songs with him and understand his process and maybe just admire the brilliance of his brain. I think as a lyricist in particular, he\u2019s so good! It blows me away how many great lyrics he has. He\u2019s such a good storyteller in a very not abstract way. Like with Elton John, it was always a lot more poetic and metaphorical and mysterious. With Billy, there was always a story. It\u2019s not just in motion, there\u2019s a dialogue going and you find yourself inside of that person that he\u2019s singing about or\u00a0talking\u00a0about. He just has a really unique capacity to tell stories in that way and I\u2019ve always admired that and musically, he\u2019s great. What\u2019s really interesting about some of the stuff he does is that he\u2019ll change keys for choruses. He does it pretty consistently and it\u2019s always just seamless. There\u2019s just a lot of things about his music that I\u2019ve always admired.<\/p>\n

FUSN:<\/strong>\u00a0You guys were just kids when you hit it big with\u00a0Middle of Nowhere<\/em>, how do you think your music has evolved over the years?
\nIH:<\/strong>\u00a0I think the essence of who we are as a band has really stayed surprisingly the same. For people who are unfamiliar with our music as a whole may only know something like\u00a0MMMBop, Where\u2019s the Love<\/em>, or the early singles might be confused. If you\u2019re listening to an early Hanson record, you\u2019re going to think \u2018Oh, wow, Hanson has changed a ton.\u2019 I think it\u2019s always been a blend of soulful, and kind of R&B inspired pop, and a little bit of gospel and blues, kind of rock\u2019n\u2019roll stuff. For the most part, I\u2019ve been really proud of how our music has matured, meaning, I think our music now has all the necessary similarities to early music that people would be familiar from us in a way that they would feel like they could enjoy it but at the same time our music is continually evolving. I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve made the same record twice.<\/p>\n
