{"id":504,"date":"2000-05-12T16:56:10","date_gmt":"2000-05-12T16:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/?p=504"},"modified":"2013-01-03T17:01:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T17:01:36","slug":"brothers-grim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/2000\/05\/12\/brothers-grim\/","title":{"rendered":"Brothers Grim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The ambitious This Time Around finds young hit makers Hanson in a rush to grow\u00a0<\/strong><strong>up.\u00a0 But where\u2019s the fun in that? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12 May 2000<\/p>\n<p>By David Browne<\/p>\n<p>Teen idols lose their musical virginity at their own risk.\u00a0 During their \u201970s\u00a0heydays, David Cassidy tried warbling standards and the Osmonds made a\u00a0concept album about their Mormon beliefs; later; New Kids on the Block\u00a0became NKOTB and attempted to play that funky music *but as somber white\u00a0boys).\u00a0 And more of these stabs at maturity were remotely enjoyable as \u201cI\u00a0Woke Up in Love This Morning,\u201d \u201cYo-Yo,\u201d and \u201cStep by Step,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In light of this history of overinflated ambitions, Hanson fans were\u00a0understandably concerned when word began filtering out that the Oklahoma\u00a0sibs were planning to rock out on their next album.\u00a0 The transition wasn\u2019t\u00a0illogical:\u00a0 After all, Taylor, Ike and Zac can both harmonize and play, they\u00a0have a deep-seated love of Big Chill R&amp;B and rock, and they most likely want\u00a0to be remembered as more than the founding brothers of \u201990s teen pop.\u00a0 All\u00a0well and good, but do we want a harder, heavier Hanson?<\/p>\n<p>This Time Around, the boys\u2019 officially follow-up to their 1997 debut, Middle of Nowhere (not withstanding the cash-in release of live, Christmas, and\u00a0\u201dearly years\u201d albums), answers that query with a forceful \u201cmaybe.\u201d\u00a0 The\u00a0changes don\u2019t begin or end\u00a0with their voices, which are deeper and more\u00a0solemn than before.\u00a0 Dense and beefy, the songs themselves are infused with\u00a0flourishes more common to blues-rock jam bands than the Hanson of old.\u00a0 Tracks\u00a0like \u201cIf Only\u201dand the unintentional War-Jethro Tull tribute \u201cIn the City\u201d\u00a0cram in wah-wah guitars, thwacking Latin percussion and breathy harmonica\u00a0solos.\u00a0 Lyrically the boys seem to have aged as well.\u00a0 They\u2019ve loved and\u00a0lost, apparently, and their life experiences (do their parents know?) are\u00a0reflected in tunes steeped in grin-faced teen angst.\u00a0 Some sentiments are\u00a0unexpectedly hardened: \u201cYou stand there trying to look so sweet\/Every word you\u00a0say is so full of deceit,\u201d\u00a0 goes a line in \u201cIn the City.\u201d\u00a0 Others are as\u00a0overheated as the backing tracks:\u00a0 As Taylor moans in \u201cDying to be Alive,\u201d\u00a0\u201dHow could I be dying?\/I turned 20 five days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Middle of Nowhere tackled serious topics as well, but the music\u2019s\u00a0sunny-afternoon vibe buoyed the album\u2019s spirits.\u00a0 By comparison, chunks of This Time Around feel sadly labored.\u00a0 The record never devolves into the hammy,\u00a0jejune blues of Jonny Lang (who makes a cameo appearance on the seesawing\u00a0single \u201cThis Time Around\u201d).\u00a0 But as heartbreaking as it is for this Hanson\u00a0fan to admit, the project reveals that the rio\u2019s desire to grow is less\u00a0problematic than want they want to grow into- a preternaturally stodgy,\u00a0somewhat conservative old-school pop-R&amp;B band.\u00a0 (One of the few modern\u00a0touches is recurring turntable scratching, by DJ Swamp of Beck\u2019s band.) In an\u00a0era for puppet-like boy bands and girl divas, it\u2019s an ironic sign of the times\u00a0that Hanson- whose music felt so breezy a few years ago- now sound ponderous\u00a0by comparison.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the album is far from a washout.\u00a0 Hanson still have the\u00a0ability to throw themselves into singing and playing with an exuberance\u00a0that\u2019s lamentably rare in\u00a0usic overall, and the high points fuse their new,\u00a0semi-grown-up sensibility and throatier voices with bundle-of-energy\u00a0melodies.\u00a0 \u201cWish That I Was There,\u201d \u201cSure About IT,\u201d and \u201cCan\u2019t Stop\u201d\u00a0explore the duskier side of \u201cMMMBop,\u201d just as the pining, gorgeous \u201cSave Me\u201d\u00a0expands on the power-ballad beauty of the first album\u2019s \u201cWeird.\u201d\u00a0 Best of all\u00a0is the unstoppable bubblegum of \u201cRunaway Run,\u201d whose chorus is guaranteed to\u00a0rouse anyone from a depressed stupor.<\/p>\n<p>This Time Around is a transitional album, and maybe not just for Hanson.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s only a matter of time before the pre-adolescents who worship teen pop\u00a0outgrow it and, perhaps finding themselves in a less ebullient economy, forge\u00a0a new underground. (Personally, I\u2019m hoping for a Euro-hip-hop-prog hybrid,\u00a0but call me a dreamer.)\u00a0 As they awkwardly wander into musical adulthood,\u00a0Hanson may once again be leading that charge into new territory.\u00a0 You only\u00a0wish their new turf didn\u2019t sound so old.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teen idols lose their musical virginity at their own risk.
