Hanson tests the new VW Bug- and Tony Romando\u2019s patience<\/strong><\/p>\n

To get Taylor Hanson prepared for his driver\u2019s test – he\u2019s almost 15-and-a-half years old, you know – we borrowed a Volkswagen Bug. The band comes as a package deal (which makes sense-just look at Michael Jackson), so we wind up with three pop stars, a few dozen pimples and more air bags than you can wave a Stridex pad at.<\/p>\n

11:27 a.m. Soiled on Sunset Boulevard<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cWhen I went to get my license, I was nervous-I felt like I hadn\u2019t driven enough,\u201d Isaac says. He looks me in the eye while saying this, which is nice, except he\u2019s driving. I\u2019m in the backseat, and we\u2019re driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic. \u201cI thought I was gonna fail, and then it was so easy. Really they just want to know\u2026\u201d \u201cWoooaaah, hey, slow down, you\u2019re gonna\u2026\u201d Zac and Taylor scream as we nearly plow into a Bronco. I find myself wishing I had listened to my mom and worn clean underwear. Or any at all.
\n\u201cYour bumper riding skills were a little too much there,\u201d squeaks Taylor as he peels himself off the dash. \u201cActually, when I get my permit, I worry for people on the sidewalk.\u201d<\/p>\n

11:45 a.m. Unabashed Beetle Worship<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cThis car is so smooth, it\u2019s actually hard to tell how fast you\u2019re going,\u201d Isaac says. We\u2019re going about 20 mph over the speed limit, but who isn\u2019t in LA? \u201cIt\u2019s like one of those little speed demons-a turtle with boosters,\u201d Taylor adds, before Isaac reminds us that we haven\u2019t put our seat belts on yet. Zac – who, by the way, fits into the car\u2019s roomy trunk-barks and howls from the backseat. Whatever; he\u2019s only 12. \u201cI want one of these,\u201d he says. \u201cHey, a cop,\u201d panics Isaac, like Scott Weiland on a bender. \u201cI ran a red light one time-on accident. Cop! Cop! Cop!\u201d<\/p>\n

12:10 p.m. Paranoid Hellions in Hollywood<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>
\nFans swarm us every time we stop at a light or pull over. Taylor: \u201cWe\u2019re being followed.\u201d Zac: \u201cWe\u2019re not being followed.\u201d Taylor: \u201cYeah, that girl back there just screamed. Look at her.\u201d So far we\u2019ve had five autograph requests, three whistles from women over 40 and a demand for a royal shout-out to the queen from a carload of British tourists. Pop star patience is wearing thin. \u201cThe coolest thing about our fans is that they\u2019re devoted,\u201d Taylor says, \u201cbut psycho.\u201d Isaac agrees, while Zac, who already matches my 27-year-old-height, mimics, \u201cWoooaaah, we\u2019re psycho.\u201d<\/p>\n

Isaac gets ready to make a left turn into oncoming traffic. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s illegal,\u201d Taylor says. Isaac turns anyway. \u201cYep, that was completely illegal,\u201d Taylor adds, before a chaotic \u201cIs not!\u201d\/\u201dIs so!\u201d pissing match. \u201cWe\u2019re psycho, woooaaah,\u201d Zac says. I think I feel a zit coming on.<\/p>\n

12:20 p.m. Hellions, Part Two<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cLets do the drive-through at In-N-Out Burger and order burritos,\u201d Taylor suggests. \u201cWait-a Chinese fire drill; we won\u2019t get arrested.\u201d Isaac, the voice of reason, discusses the illegality of this stunt as he makes another lane change in the middle of an intersection-the Department of Motor Vehicles tends to frown upon these too. \u201cIsaac, you dork, do it at the next stoplight,\u201d Taylor says. \u201cDaaaaang,\u201d Zac yells in between barks, as Isaac stops at the next light. \u201cIt\u2019s green, you idiot. We\u2019re gonna die,\u201d Taylor shouts, as he circles the car three times, dodging motorist profanities and big-city-style horn-blowing.<\/p>\n

12:59 p.m. Future Shock<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cGetting your license gives you the right to pick your nose in the car,\u201d Taylor says. \u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Isaac adds. \u201cThis is America.\u201d Pulling up to check in with Dad, who has been waiting patiently at the Greek Theatre, Zac inquires as to whether papa has any Grey Poupon. No one listens-it\u2019s tough being 12. \u201cI\u2019ve been kinda bashful about driving a car without a license,\u201d Taylor says as we get out, \u201c\u2019cause, like in go-carts, I\u2019ll crash them. It\u2019s probably mostly on purpose. I\u2019m really worried about everyone else in the car, but I\u2019m getting more comfortable with it. I think it\u2019s gonna be pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n
