Expect Hanson fans to sing and clap along when the trio takes its ‘Anthem” tour to Starland Ballroom next week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nEverything may seem just fine in the world of Hanson these days \u2013 and things are going reasonably well for the trio of brothers these days.<\/p>\n
The group\u2019s latest CD, \u201cAnthem,\u201d has been released and Hanson is on the first leg of a North American tour that visits theaters and large clubs. What\u2019s more, \u201cAnthem\u201d is a particularly cheery album, full of the kind of pop-rock\u2013 ahem, anthems \u2013 that should have audiences singing and clapping along to the songs.<\/p>\n
The tone of \u201cAnthem\u201d is especially striking considering what happened about a year ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this record was an interesting one because we really reached a point in 2012 where this record almost didn\u2019t get made,\u201d Zac Hanson said in a mid-August phone interview. \u201cIt was the first time, really ever, we had come up against a challenge that was maybe bigger than this band, in the sense of it was hard to overcome, just personal, not taking care of what\u2019s most important. And you do something long enough, you begin to take those relationships with each other, the things that come so easily for so long, for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Noting that he and his brothers, Isaac and Taylor, aren\u2019t the type to air their dirty laundry in public, Hanson didn\u2019t delve into ugly details, but it\u2019s clear that the normal sibling harmony had gone off key.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the best way to say it is just we became overworked,\u201d Hanson said, noting the time invested into various Hanson business concerns had taken a toll. \u201cWe run the (record) label. We manage ourselves. We produce the records. All the projects we do in addition to music, and things like Take the Walk (a charitable effort by the band), all the merchandise, and we\u2019re starting a beer company, all of those things (were happening). And then if you do all of those things and then you get to go do the music, but the music is sort of burdened by all of those things, your relationship is burdened by all of the stresses of everything around you.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou haven\u2019t taken the time to sort of clean the closet, do the spring cleaning. Then it was just sort of emotionally explosive,\u201d he said. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t a lot of care given to each other.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t one moment or one thing or one disagreement. It was really an overall sense that the music wasn\u2019t getting the emotional energy.<\/p>\n
We weren\u2019t taking the time for the music because it had somehow, one way or another, become that extra thing. \u2018Oh no, we\u2019ve got to go do the music.\u2019 So it was sort of a hard re-set.\u201d<\/p>\n
The brothers, who were between the ages of 11 and 16 when they broke onto the national scene in 1997, decided to take last summer off, and after the break, the three brothers returned with renewed purpose, and Hanson thinks that feeling translates into the \u201cAnthem\u201d album.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was really a sense when we came back together that we were fighting for this band, that as a unit, we were all ready to sort of start again,\u201d he said. \u201cYou hear it in the music. So many of the songs, I think, are about, songs like \u2018Already Home,\u2019 which is about saying look around you. You\u2019re already there. You\u2019ve already got what matters. Or, \u2018You Can\u2019t Stop Us,\u2019 which is fighting for what you believe in and not letting anything get in your way.\u201d<\/p>\n
That spirit extended to the music on \u201cAnthem,\u201d which predominantly is populated by songs like \u201cFired Up,\u201d \u201cYou Can\u2019t Stop Us\u201d and \u201cCut Right Through Me\u201d with big guitars, big pop hooks and big choruses.<\/p>\n
That tone is a notably different from the more piano-driven pop-soul sound of Hanson\u2019s previous album, \u201cShout It Out.\u201d But Hanson noted that ever since the group\u2019s chart-busting major label debut, 1997\u2019s \u201cMiddle Of Nowhere\u201d (featuring the smash single, \u201cMMMBop\u201d), the group has tended to change up its sound on each of the five subsequent studio albums.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Shout It Out,\u2019 was very piano-driven, and so I think what happened (on \u201cAnthem\u201d) was there was just this comeback of the guitar,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cThe guitar rose again, and with that, there were a lot of riffs and driving melodies.\u201d<\/p>\n
The concert-friendly sound of \u201cAnthem\u201d has Hanson excited about the group\u2019s current tour of the U.S. and Canada, which runs through Nov. 20 and makes a stop Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville. Hanson noted that while new material will be featured, the group will play songs going back to \u201cMMMBop\u201d in its show.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo much of this record was written really thinking about the live experience,\u201d he said. \u201cThis album, even more than others, we wrote these parts where you really heard \u2018Oh man, it\u2019s going to be awesome when the audience sings \u2018You Can\u2019t Stop Us\u2019 or claps along right there. And so, I\u2019m particularly excited to hear this music with the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
