Remember Hanson, the band of brothers who took the pop music world by storm in 1997 when their single, \u201cMmmbop\u201d (you\u2019re welcome for the ear worm), netted a pair of Grammy nods and hit No. 1 in 27 countries? Are you recalling ways you have used the talented trio as a punchline?<\/p>\n

Well, knock it off.<\/p>\n

You might have moved on (or maybe you\u2019ve grown up with them), but Hanson never left. They\u2019re on tour in support of their latest release, \u201cAnthem,\u201d on their own label, 3CG Records. It\u2019s the band\u2019s eighth album to land in the top 40 of Billboard\u2019s 200 chart and it hit number 5 on the chart for independent releases.<\/p>\n

A friend of mine \u2014 a recording engineer who has corrected vocal tracks from the biggest names in music \u2014 once told me that Hanson provided the only vocals he didn\u2019t have to tweak.<\/p>\n

I had a chance to speak with middle brother Taylor, now 30, who sings lead on the album\u2019s first single, \u201cGet the Girl Back,\u201d in advance of the band\u2019s gig Sunday at Antone\u2019s. We chatted about the band, the new album and the brothers\u2019 latest side project \u2014 a craft beer with a decidedly familiar name.<\/p>\n

Austin American-Statesman: You guys have an Austin connection, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taylor Hanson:<\/strong> We met our first manager at South by Southwest in 1994. We were kids; I was probably about 11. We just walked down the street and asked to sing for people and one of the people that didn\u2019t just kind of think, \u201cOh, these kids are crazy\u201d was a young music attorney. He ended up becoming our manager and helped us sign our first deal.<\/p>\n

How is the material on your new album, \u201cAnthem,\u201d different from that of your previous releases?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We grew up listening to soul music and real craftsmen song writers, so we always have melodic songs and pop hooks in our records. One of the things that\u2019s different on this record is that we definitely leaned on the guitar more. I think there\u2019s just an intensity in the things that we wanted to say and the sound we wanted to create. There\u2019s a little bit of fire; there\u2019s a little bit of fight and attitude.<\/p>\n

But the soul is still there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s in our DNA. The music that first inspired us \u2014 Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, Little Richard \u2014 that stuff gets in your blood and, as a musician, you want to be able to feel what you felt the first time you heard it. The first single, \u201cGet the Girl Back,\u201d is that to the bone. It\u2019s a \u201860s soul pop song.<\/p>\n

What do you guys do when you\u2019re not on tour?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, we all have families. We\u2019ve all got kids.<\/p>\n

Are your kids musical?<\/strong><\/p>\n

They are. There\u2019s definitely music in the genes and there\u2019s music all around them.<\/p>\n

Would you want them to pursue careers in music?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You just want your kids to be doing something that they love.<\/p>\n

What else keeps you busy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re an independent band, so we run our label; we run all the business stuff. This year we\u2019re also launching a whole other project, which is our Hanson beer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMmmhops.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. It\u2019s a pale ale. We\u2019ve had some fun with it. Obviously, the name is a little bit tongue-in-cheek, but that song, \u201cMmmbop,\u201d had such a strong connection with so many people it\u2019s really interesting to see when you connect it to a beer.<\/p>\n

Are you guys craft beer aficionados?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, we\u2019re definitely fans and we know craft beer \u2014 enough about it to get ourselves into trouble. And what connects better with music than great beer? The two things go hand in hand. If you\u2019ve got the music and you\u2019ve got the beer, you\u2019ve got a party!<\/p>\n
