Hanson have turned 21 and unveiled their own beer, \u2018MMMHops\u2019. But more importantly they return with new album \u2018Anthem\u2019, as Zac Hanson tells Jeremy Williams.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tulsa trio Hanson have notched up 21 years of musical exploration \u2013 in which time they have sold over 16 million records worldwide and scored 8 UK Top 40 singles \u2013 but their journey is far from over.<\/p>\n

While the band of brothers \u2013 Ike, Taylor and Zac \u2013 may have branched out into beer to mark their \u2018coming of age\u2019 \u2013 MMMHops (currently not available in the UK) \u2013 their musical ambitions remain intact, as they unveil studio album number six (their fourth on their own label 3CG), Anthem<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With the boys in Britain to promote the record, youngest member (and the only one still under 30) Zac decided to fill-in So So Gay<\/em> on their current state of play.<\/p>\n

\u2018We have always been influenced by 50s and 60s Motown Records\u2019, Zac opens, \u2018but Anthem<\/em>\u00a0is a bit of a step forward, an exploration of our rock side\u2019.<\/p>\n

For anyone unfamiliar with Hanson\u2019s versatile back catalogue and only aware of their multi-platinum d\u00e9but Middle Of Nowhere<\/em>, Zac\u2019s statement may be somewhat inexplicable. While their groove driven d\u00e9but was filled with funk-fuelled infectious pop, Hanson have spent the last 21 years applying their passion for Motown to an array of genres \u2013 for those who have a penchant for Blues, we recommend This Time Around<\/em>, those who love African grooves turn to The Walk<\/em>\u00a0and for the sheer pleasure of funk soul try Shout It Out<\/em>\u00a0– however, Anthem<\/em>\u00a0sees the trio arrive at a sound removed from their primary influence.<\/p>\n

\"Hanson1-170x300\"Though Zac concedes that they \u2018still have our pop sensibility \u2013 a focus on melody and harmony\u2019, he reveals\u00a0\u2018Anthem<\/em>\u00a0explores the side of the band that adored \u2018Aerosmith, AC\/DC and Queen when we were growing up.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018On Anthem<\/em>\u00a0the guitar makes a big comeback. Our last record, Shout It Out<\/em>, saw us playing a lot of guitar, a lot of piano so we decided to use more of the guitar again.\u2019 Though the process was an organic exploration of their sonic status, Zac notes that from the very outset Anthem<\/em>\u00a0stuck out as being a little bit bigger.<\/p>\n

\u2018They are the songs that when performing live, an audience can sing back louder.\u2019 With Zac proudly stating, \u2018I feel like we are making our best music now\u2019, he notes, \u2018we have just got so many more years of experience, and so many more sounds have influenced our ears.\u2019<\/p>\n

With the group never happy to stay static and stuck in a sound, he reveals that his biggest career ambition is born out of a need to \u2018continue to reinvent. It\u2019s something that\u2019s always difficult, as new sounds are always just beyond our fingertips.\u2019<\/p>\n

With Zac open to a discussion of the group\u2019s creativity, he reveals that Hanson always \u2018write a lot as a group\u2019, a process which clearly diminishes the need for ego.<\/p>\n

While Taylor was always seen as the group\u2019s frontman and vocalist in the early days, anyone who has listened to their more recent work will note an increase in the use of Ike and Zac\u2019s equally impressive vocals.<\/p>\n

With Anthem<\/em> their most evenly distributed vocal effort to date, Zac reveals they are \u2018never conscious of that, it\u2019s all very natural.\u2019 The truly humble musical icon reveals that although \u2018we made a conscious effort to make sure that Isaac had a share of the lead vocals as he didn\u2019t sing lead on any of the last album\u2019, the division of vocal parts is based purely on the tonal quality of vocal most appropriate to the song itself: \u2018I have the highest voice, Ike the lowest and Tay has a strong soulful voice, and so we sing in that formation.<\/p>\n

\"hanson-198x300\"\u2018After 21 years we have done it each and every way, so it\u2019s definitely now just a case of being able to say, you sound better on that song.\u2019<\/p>\n

Though Anthem<\/em> showcases the sheer power of the three vocalists\u2019 individual characteristics, it becomes apparent that Zac is perhaps most proud of their beauty in their vocal union. \u2018We write a lot as a trio, so we\u2019re able to just explore as we write.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018On \u2018You Can\u2019t Stop Us\u2019 it was originally me singing the verse, but then as we were singing \u2018Us\u2019 and not \u2018I\u2019 we thought it would be good to switch leads, so it was not just \u2018me\u2019. I think it adds a really cool character to the band.\u2019<\/p>\n

While Anthem<\/em> clearly demonstrates Hanson\u2019s vocal distinctions and strengths and an aptitude for a rock-driven sound, it also boasts the inclusion of a fourth vocalist \u2013 Fitz and The Tantrums\u2019 Michael Fitzgerald \u2013 on two songs.<\/p>\n

Though loyal fans will be aware of previous collaborations \u2013 from acclaimed Blues guitarist Jonny Lang appearing on three songs from This Time Around<\/em>\u00a0though to a duet with Emma Daumas (\u2018Someone (Laissons-Nous Une Chance)\u2019 for the French edition of Underneath<\/em>\u00a0– Fitzgerald\u2019s appearance feels the most natural to date.<\/p>\n

\u2018We met them while promoting Shout It Out<\/em>\u00a0– we did a lot of the same radio, television and festival appearances and we struck up a friendship. We have a lot of similar influences \u2013 Motown and Old School Funk \u2013 so it was just a natural fit. We were just in the studio tracking and just asked if he wanted to come down, and now he features on two of the songs.\u2019<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s clear that Zac enjoyed his latest foray into collaboration, he is acutely aware that there is little need for Hanson to explore additional members.<\/p>\n

While at times the three members have lent their skills to other projects, most notably Taylor fronted rock supergroup Tinted Windows, Zac explains, \u2018we love the idea of collaboration, but there are certain artists who do that more out of celebrity. They choose to team up with hip artists for profile, but we will only do it if it feels natural.\u2019<\/p>\n
