(Pop Purgatory is fame plus time.) Because we\u2019re unwilling to let albums released by established if unfashionable pop culture institutions come and go without a proper listen, we\u2019re giving these damned souls a shot at redemption \u2014 or at least some much-needed publicity outside of their respective fan bubbles. In this installment, we look at<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i>Anthem<em>, the latest LP from the &#8220;MMMBop&#8221;-ping bubblegum brother act, Hanson.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Period of Peak Fame:<\/strong>\u00a01997. Do I really have to explain \u201cMMMBop\u201d to you people? You are aware that it moved 10 million units of Hanson\u2019s breakthrough album,\u00a0<em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>, because it happens to be a perfect distillation of all that is pure and innocent (OK, maybe not that pure and innocent but definitely all that\u2019s stupidly enjoyable) about childhood, aren\u2019t you? You have two ears and a heart, I presume?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0What\u2019s Happened Since:<\/strong>\u00a0Hanson\u2019s post-\u201cMMMBop\u201d career is sadly typical (and then sort of not) of young artists who are run through the teen-pop meat grinder. The follow-up to\u00a0<em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>, 2000\u2019s\u00a0<em>This Time Around<\/em>, coincided with a corporate changeover at Hanson\u2019s record label, and when the album didn\u2019t even come close to doing diamond-level numbers, the band\u2019s tour funding was pulled. By 2004\u2019s\u00a0<em>Underneath<\/em>, Hanson returned to its pre-fame indie roots, forming its own label, 3CG (short for \u201cthree-car garage,\u201d the brothers\u2019 original home recording studio, as well as a reference to a 1998 compilation of early recordings), that continues to put out the band\u2019s music to this day, including\u00a0<em>Anthem<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where Are They Now:<\/strong>\u00a0Was there a group marked for one-hit-wonderdom with more extreme prejudice in the \u201990s than Hanson? Surely nobody assumed that the floppy-haired nobs in Deep Blue Something were built to go the distance. But Hanson? The little kids who made blond longhairs harmlessly adorable again after Kurt Cobain? It seemed highly implausible that Hanson would ever make it to album no. 11. And yet, here we are:<em>Anthem<\/em>\u00a0comes 18 years after the group\u2019s first record, and the drummer who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/intimages\/hanson2.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[2274]\" target=\"_blank\">looked like a lost Olsen twin<\/a>\u00a0back in \u201997 is two years from 30. Time flies when you\u2019re not paying attention, eh?<\/p>\n<p>In a way, it shouldn\u2019t be surprising that Hanson is still with us \u2014 from the beginning, these kids had a knack for the business they call show. Taylor, Isaac, and Zac haven\u2019t been able to replicate the success of \u201cMMMBop,\u201d but they keep on turning out slick, well-made pop product just the same. Hanson is the pop equivalent of those Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender after the end of World War II, opting instead to prowl the jungle for years and years until they were needed again. Taking this analogy to its illogical conclusion,\u00a0<em>Anthem<\/em>\u00a0is Hanson\u2019s WWIII album \u2014 they\u2019re here and ready to fill a pop-soul niche for an audience that wishes the members of Maroon 5 were related.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, I haven\u2019t kept up with Hanson\u2019s discography, so maybe the more rock-oriented, soaring anthem-ness of\u00a0<em>Anthem<\/em>\u00a0isn\u2019t necessarily a \u201cnew\u201d direction. But Hanson cops a positively metal stance on this record that I definitely did not expect \u2014 on the factually titled opening track, \u201cFired Up,\u201d Taylor murmurs, \u201cCome with us if you want to live,\u201d with a trace of what could charitably be described as \u201cmenace\u201d but is more appropriately described as \u201cawkwardness.\u201d At least it\u2019s likably tuneful awkwardness \u2014<em>Anthem<\/em>\u2019s \u201cMichael Jackson vocals plus bubble-grunge guitars\u201d template suggests that Hanson set out to make a version of Fall Out Boy\u2019s recent\u00a0<em>Save Rock and Roll<\/em>\u00a0that was actually listenable. They succeeded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representative Track:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cGet the Girl Back\u201d gives you everything you could want and didn\u2019t know you could possibly ask for from a 2013 Hanson record you probably weren\u2019t aware existed: cowbell, handclaps, more cowbell, the horn section from Bruce Willis\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Return of Bruno<\/em>, MORE COWBELL, a credible James Jamerson bass line, backing vocals that sound like soulful Muppets, AND SWEET JESUS THERE CAN NEVER BE ENOUGH COWBELL!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantland.com\/blog\/hollywood-prospectus\/post\/_\/id\/79955\/escape-from-pop-purgatory-hansons-anthem\">http:\/\/www.grantland.com\/blog\/hollywood-prospectus\/post\/_\/id\/79955\/escape-from-pop-purgatory-hansons-anthem<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Steven Hyden\u00a0on\u00a0June 19, 2013 Grantland\u00a0 &nbsp; Welcome to\u00a0Escape From Pop Purgatory, where we check out new music made by people who are more well-known than 98 percent of the oppressively \u201ccool\u201d artists who the media obsesses over, and yet are commonly perceived to be years past the point of their cultural relevance.
