Neither is it their fault that they\u2019re so dang cute.<\/p>\n<p>If both those factors weigh against them in terms of gaining street cred, it\u2019s to their credit that they don\u2019t care. They\u2019re here to make music, not take the money and run, unlike the host of boy bands their popularity helped launch \u2013 like the Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees and \u201cN\u201d Sync, whose motto seems to be dress fancy, sing other people\u2019s songs and don\u2019t sweat the issue of artistic integrity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2000_22.jpg?ssl=1\" data-lightbox=\"gal[1084]\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"510\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/?attachment_id=510\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2000_22.jpg?fit=201%2C239&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"201,239\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"2000_22\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2000_22.jpg?fit=201%2C239&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-510 alignleft\" alt=\"2000_22\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmmboptastic.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2000_22.jpg?resize=201%2C239&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"201\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a>But Isaac, 19, Taylor, 17 and Zachary, 14, are after something more lasting. \u201cThis Time Around,\u201d the new follow up album to \u201cMiddle of Nowhere\u201d is a wonderful step forward for the band \u2013 showcasing their growth as both musicians and young men \u2013 and proving that the Hanson operation is still a homespun affair.<\/p>\n<p>All the songs are written by the brothers (almost unheard of these days), their parents still play strongly into their management and they even dress like \u2026. Well, kids (albeit hip ones) from Tulsa \u2013 no Prada in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever they\u2019re doing, it\u2019s working. The new album has been embraced by critics- even as observers wonder if Hanson\u2019s departure from the formula of their early hit \u201cMMMBop,\u201d is the reason it\u2019s not selling as hotly. And after their live shows, like the one at the Warfield Friday night, kick the stuffing out of their youthful competitors in terms of organic, from-the-gut, youthfully exuberant rock.<\/p>\n<p>They could sell out a much larger venue, but choose to stick to middle-sized ones like the Warfield, ostensibly to maintain contact with their fans, who jammed the front of the stage, predictably screaming like banshees. They almost drowned out the music at times, which was a shame, since Isaac, Taylor and Zac know how to bring it, live.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly two hours, Hanson rocked like they meant it \u2013 never letting the energy drag and building up a sweat. With the exception of three songs in the middle of the show that showcased the three brothers and one guitar to accompany them, the band featured Zac on drums, Isaac on guitar and Taylor on keyboards. Backing them were three other musicians.<\/p>\n<p>The telegenic Taylor, whose cheekbones defy description, did the lion\u2019s share of the singing, with vocals that range between Michael Jackson\u2019s raspy tenor and Jonny Lang\u2019s more youthful, bluesy howl. Isaac has a more mature voice, with a smoother\u00a0delivery; together and with Zac on the third part, their harmonies are purer and more honest than any\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0heard lately.<\/p>\n<p>They are also natural showmen, relishing the spotlight but not hogging it, and generous in their interactions with their audience. There was way too much \u201cput your hands together\u201d gesturing but they were giving the teen audience what they came for.<\/p>\n<p>What the teen audience might not have expected was this much ROCK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou Never Know\u201d roared out of the gate, with its fierce Latinized beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the Love,\u201d a bubble gum classic from the first album, was played with fire. And \u201cRunaway Run,\u201d one of the best songs on the new album, has a Springsteen-inspired verse and chorus that soars.<\/p>\n<p>So confident were the three that they tackled a couple of unrecorded songs, including the beautiful \u201cI Don\u2019t Know,\u201d rather than just pound out the hits. \u201cCan\u2019t Stop,\u201d was a barn burner. And inspired by Janis Joplin\u2019s city, the band did a pretty good \u201cPiece of My Heart,\u201d with more zeal than was managed by Faith Hill the other night.<\/p>\n<p>But when the three sat down with just mikes and a guitar, to croon \u201cWish That I was There,\u201d in perfect, heartfelt, hootenanny harmony, it was clear that they\u00a0weren&#8217;t\u00a0just singing for the girls \u2013 they were singing for the ages.
