Bopping With Hanson

Former teen pop group Hanson has grown into a mature rock outfit capable of taking care of its own career. RIZAL JOHAN meets the band.

THEY were just teenagers when Hanson exploded into the music scene in 1997 with their infectious hit, MmmBop. Three albums later, the Hanson brothers – Isaac, Taylor and Zac – are young men and most importantly, musicians who have complete control over their career.

Hanson was in Malaysia for a one night acoustic show at Hard Rock Cafe, Kuala Lumpur last week to promote its latest album release, Underneath. It has been a long time coming for the band whose last release was 2000’s This Time Around. Much has changed since then as vocalist/keyboardist, Taylor, related in an interview last week.

MTV Asia: Underneath

Sounds Like: Hanson are known for their vibrant pop bounce and catchy melodies, and their debut hit “MMMBop” paved the way for their overnight success in the ’90s. Hanson’s music was in stark contrast to the doom and grunge of mainstream rock, and perhaps it was for this reason that the public so welcomed them.

Mmmbopping Back!

In 1997, the impossibly young, impossibly cute boy band Hanson chirped their way into our brains with the impossibly catchy hit MmmBop and multi-million-selling album, Middle Of Nowhere. It’s the kind of story — a band of siblings who experience massive popularity at a young age — that usually ends in a rapid slide to obscurity, if not worse. I mean, what’s the likelihood that these boys could grow up without at least one DUI charge or rehab stint?

And yet, here they are seven years later, with a brand new Hanson album, Underneath, released on the brothers’ own record label, and no signs of family dysfunction. In fact, it seems that Hanson have earned the right to be taken seriously as pop songwriters — no mean feat for a grownup boy band.
